The Despotic Queen makes no apologies for the fact that I fawn over Francisco Costa like he’s one of my monetary safe havens, nor will I apologise for saying that he makes this curmudgeon’s cooze moister than an oil-based snack cake.
Last
season, Costa’s square toe chain mail wedges had Imelda bouncing of the Palace
walls. So much so, that it was one of the Despotic Queen’s top five shoes for
the S/S 10 season. However, this season the Calvin Klein Creative Director
cranked the stitt-o-metre up to 11 with his chopine inspired brushed metal
platforms and wedge soles.
Costa
used a traditional, albeit refreshing, Upper Eastside colour palette of butter,
white and black on a series of silhouettes that included over-the-ankle biker
boots, open toe crossover sandals and ankle strapped pumps.
An
interesting and subtle juxtaposition was how Costa soled his platforms with
cleated rubber. A traditional out-doorsy treatment (and a key trend in men’s
footwear) it lends a more urbane flavour to the chopine platform, which as we’ve
seen, has been a favourite design element used over the last few seasons in the
more subversive S&M themed collections.
Whilst
mien ears can hear some Imeldettes scream “enough with the towering stitts” and
fear not, Imelda will find and then weed you out (of the Order) for such
heretical ramblings, Costa has balanced the height by incorporating thick brushed
metal heels which should aid those of you who find vertigo inducing platforms a
bothersome trend that Imelda insists on backing.
