In a week where the heels, much to Imelda’s chagrin, have been downsized, the Despotic Queen’s one glimmer of hope for some haute high action was the epic spectacular which is the Nicholas Kirkwood for Rodarte show…and he didn’t disappoint.
With La Skovgaard no-longer collaborating with Matthew Williamson, The Beloved (aka Nicholas Kirkwood) has been left to Lord over the catwalks of New York Fashion Week as the only footwear designer of any significance.
After
last season’s ‘Beyond the Thunderdome’ stitts, Kirkwood has switched gears and
presented a much softer, more feminine silhouette for the shut-in sisters (aka
the sisters Mulleavy). Perhaps the trio have been buoyed by the editorial
success of the high profile collaboration because this season Kirkwood has extended
his offering and presented at least 5/6 variations of his open and closed toe
platforms.
I’m going to ignore the all too obvious white wicker witch references and suggest that Kirkwood’s dripping wax feature heel was, in fact, inspired by drip tapper candles – the kind made fashionable by suburban Italian eateries in the late 70’s and early 80’s.
